If you are privileged enough to be the proud owner of an Australian Cattle Dog then you already know how much they shed. This article describes some of the tools needed for deshedding and reviews some of the best deshedding tools for Australian Cattle Dogs.

The Australian Cattle Dog’s Coat

The Australian Cattle Dog is considered a medium-sized, short-haired dog with a double coat. The undercoat acts as a protector of your dog’s skin. The undercoat is short, soft, dense, and woolly. It acts as insulation keeping your dog cooler in hot weather and warmer in cold weather.

The outer coat is only about an inch and a half long. It further protects your dog from the elements by preserving the undercoat. Both the undercoat and the outer coat act together to protect your dog against weather extremes.

Therefore, it is essential that you never, ever have a double-coated dog shaved. If you shave your dog’s fur, it will never grow back the way it should. Also, your dog may no longer be protected from weather extremes. Your dog could become more susceptible to colds and viruses. So please don’t ever do this.

How Can I Reduce My Australian Cattle Dog’s Shedding

You can’t completely eliminate the shedding. Most Australian Cattle Dogs shed heavily twice per year. This is referred to as blowing their coat. You can, however, stop 90 to 95% of the shedding by regular bathing and grooming your dog.

Australian Cattle Dogs should be bathed approximately once per month. Since your dog is such an active, energetic breed she may require more frequent bathing.

Australian Cattle Dogs should be brushed at least once a week. However, the more frequently you can brush your dog the more the shedding will be reduced.

Regular Grooming Maintenance For Double-Coated Dogs

It’s very important for the health of your dog’s skin to keep her undercoat free of dirt, debris, and dander. Dander causes allergies in people who are sensitive to animal dander. Dander is dead skin cells that remain stuck in the undercoat. The dander remains there until removed by brushing, combing, deshedding, and bathing your dog.

Dog’s skin needs to be exposed to air. For this to occur, free the undercoat of all dirt, debris, and dander that has collected in the undercoat. You should check your dog’s skin and undercoat regularly. The daily checks will aid you to ensure she hasn’t gotten into something that is blocking the air from her skin.

What are Line-combing and Line-Brushing?

Before bathing your dog you should line-brush her to remove all the debris, matting, and loose fur from the undercoat. Line-brushing or line-combing is a method of grooming the undercoat. You start at one end of the dog and work your way to the other end.

First, hold up your dog’s fur as much as you can with your hand that is not grooming the dog. Next, pull up on the fur until you can see her skin. Then brush or comb down in a line to remove any matting, dander, and whatever has collected in her undercoat.

Ideally, you would line-comb or brush daily but, it is very time-consuming. Therefore, you can split it up into sections and do a small section of your dog daily. Daily line-combing or brushing will help keep the undercoat deshed and clean and allow the air to get to her skin.

Bathing Your Australian Cattle Dog

Bathe your dog with a good quality shampoo for dogs. Never use human shampoo on your dog. Apply the shampoo and massage it in with a washing glove to help get the shampoo all over her fur and into the undercoat. Oatmeal-based shampoos and conditioners are suitable for your dog’s skin.

Put a generous amount of shampoo on your dog. Once you have her fully covered with shampoo, brush all of the loose undercoat and outer coat that is ready to come off. Only brush her fur in the direction of the coat.

When you have completed the shampooing part of her bath, rinse her thoroughly to be sure you remove all of the loose fur and shampoo remaining on her. If you have a separate conditioner put this on her after the shampoo has been thoroughly rinsed out.

Thoroughly massage the conditioner into your dog’s fur. Be sure to cover the entire dog, including her chest and belly. Some conditioners work best when left on the dog for a few minutes. While you are waiting the amount of time specified, brush her again to remove all of the remaining loose fur.

When done with the conditioner, rinse her thoroughly to be sure to get all of the loose fur and conditioner off of her. Dry her first with an absorbent towel to remove excess moisture.

Drying Your Dog After a Bath

Another way to remove any excess undercoat after a bath is using a force dryer. The force dryer will also allow you to be sure she is completely dried. Once your dog is thoroughly dry, brush her again once more to be sure you have gotten all the loose fur that is ready to come out.

Most likely you will have gotten the majority of loose hair out of her by brushing, combing, and bathing. Also, the force dryer is a great way to remove any remaining loose hair.

Grooming Sprays

Sometimes, especially with dogs with longer hair, you may run into a problem with matting and tangled hair. Use a detangling spray while brushing her to help relax your dog and ease the pain of pulling out tangles. This could make the brush out go much smoother.

Many of the detanglers have a fresh fragrance that will make your dog smell better between baths, as well as make her brushing and combing sessions go much better.

My Selections

Although all of the selections had a few negative reviews, the vast majority of the reviews are all very positive. However, for my best selection for the best undercoat rake, I am selecting the Mars Coat King Double Wide De-Matting Undercoat Rake. This 2-sided tool can remove up to 97% of the undercoat including dander, allergens, as well as mats, and tangles. This tool also has rubber-coated bristles which results in much less discomfort for your pet.

My selection for Best Budget Grooming Tool is the Hertzko Self-Cleaning Dog & Cat Slicker Brush. This is a very reasonably priced tool that still does a good job. It is the best choice in the lower-priced range.

My selection for the best overall grooming tool has to go with the FURminator Dog Deshedding Tool. This tool comes in 3 sizes so you can pick the best size and hair length for your pet’s needs. This brush reduces shedding by 95% which is great!

Final Thoughts

All of these grooming tools were very highly rated so it is hard to go wrong with them. I hope these reviews provide you with some insight into the need for regular grooming and what tools are the best choices for your purposes.

Be sure when you are selecting your tool, that you look closely at the size, hair length, and other choices available for these tools.

  1. Hi Barbara,
I have never owned an Australian Cattle dog, but I have have quite a few long haired dogs, mostly Terriers. And they would roll in the grass and get their fur into a tangled mess, and not to mention they picked plenty of the burrs outdoors.
I few times we had no choice but to cut off the tangled fur. This was years ago and we didn’t have any of these much nicer de-shedding tools. I can see how much easier these tools will make the process. Thank you for sharing these tools

    • Hi Chas,

Thanks very much for your comment. I’m happy that you got some value out of it. Yes, there are definitely a lot more de-shedding tools out there now. This is also great for allergy sufferers so they don’t have to suffer so much from allergies due to pet dander and fur. It is good to have the ability to take good care of our dogs and to give them the best lives we can.

Thank you again for your comment!

  2. Hi Barbara.
There is nothing better than knowing the right tools to use for a job and applying them. I am also intrigued by the terminology used – line combing, line brushing etc. Although I do not own or know anyone with an Australian Cattle dog, using the right tool will also prevent safety mishaps! In addition, I love the GoPets Dematting Comb with 2-Sided Professional Grooming Rake for Cats & Dogs for its multi-functionality.

    Thanks, Ceci

  3. HI Ceci,

Thanks so much for your comment. I am happy to hear you found value in this review. There are many dog breeds in addition to Australian Cattle Dogs that have double coats and would benefit from these grooming tools. Some are best for short-haired double-coated dogs and others are best for long-haired double-coated dogs so it is important to make the right selection for your pet when selecting a grooming tool.

    Thanks again for your comment,

  4. My sister’s dog is not an Australian cattle dog but oh my I have never seen a dog shedding more hair than her dog. Not sure if her dog is a cross-breed (probably mixed) but it pretty much looks like a white Alsation.

No jokes, every day my sister sweeps the floor and there is enough hair there it seems to create a small fur coat lol.

I will point her to this article as your tips for the deshedding of the Australian cattle dog may prove very helpful for her dog too.

    • Hi Schalk,

Yes, I have 2 Australian Cattle Dogs and they shed like crazy, especially the younger one. Her fur was everywhere until I started doing something about it, especially in this hot climate. I hope your sister can get some relief from the shedding from some of these products. I have had a lot of dogs but never one that sheds as much as these before.

Thanks very much for your comment,
