Buyer’s Guide – What to Look for When Selecting a Portable Dog Water Bottle for Hiking

There are several factors that must be taken into consideration when selecting a portable water carrier for hiking with your dog. Here are just a few of the major concerns.

Dog Size, Length of Hikes, and the Weather During your Hikes

One important consideration you will need to make is the size of your dog and the usual length and duration of your hikes. A large dog will need to consume more water than a smaller dog. Also, you will need a lot more water for a 5-mile hike than for a 2-mile hike.

The weather will also factor into this consideration. If you will be hiking during the summer months, then you will need to provide more water for your dog than will be required during the winter months.

It is a good idea to try and figure out how much you need for both hot and cold weather. If you want to avoid buying 2 water containers that hold different amounts of water, then try and purchase 1 container that will hold that maximum amount of water you will need.

Dogs require at least 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day. What this means is that you will need 30 ouncers of water per day for an average day for your 30-pound dog. However, this amount will increase when your dog is hiking or doing other forms of exercising. What this means is that you could possibly require as much as twice as much water for your dog when she is hiking or doing other forms of exercise on very hot days.

Unless your hiking trails have locations where you can refill yours and your pet’s water, you will most likely need to take 2 filled bottles of water for your dog and maybe for yourself on very hot days.

Importance of Hydrating your Dog

Keeping your dog hydrated is very important for her overall health. If she gets dehydrated it can affect her digestion, appetite, and kidney function. The easiest way to spot dehydration in your dog is the loss of elasticity in their skin.

You can check this by pulling lightly on your dog’s skin. If it doesn’t return quickly to it’s original position, your dog could be experiencing dehydration.

If your dog shows any symptoms of dehydration, heat stroke or any other heat-related condition call your vet or an emergency vet no matter where you are. Your dog’s life could be in danger.

How will you Carry the Water During Your Hikes?

Another important consideration to make is how will you carry the water when hiking? Consider the weight of the container when filled. Also look for a shoulder strap or a carabiner that connects it to your day pack or belt.

I prefer to carry as little as possible in my hands when hiking with my dog. If the bottle will be heavy, it will probably be more comfortable to carry it using a shoulder strap either over the shoulder or crossbody. If the water bottle is not too heavy, I would probably try to find a way to hook it to my belt or to the day pack.

Material and Durability

Most water carriers for dogs are made of plastic, stainless steel, or silicone. Here is where you will need to consider what is the highest priority for you? While plastic and silicone are very lightweight, they are not all the durable. Stainless steel is the most durable and it will keep the water cold, however it is the heaviest.

Which ever material you decide upon, be sure to verify that it is safe for dogs. Another feature that will make it more convenient is if it is dishwasher safe. This will make it much easier to keep clean.

Durability is also very important especially if you do a lot of hiking with your dog. You want your dog’s water carrier to be durable and to last as long as possible.

Another very important feature to look for is that the water carrier is leakproof. This is a very important feature as you will probably want to be able to keep the water wherever it is most convenient for you. You will not want to worry about water leaking out all over your stuff or your dog’s stuff. So be sure the carrier you select is completely waterproof.

Does the Water Carrier Come with a Dispenser Cup?

Most water carriers for dogs come with some means of serving the water to your dog. Some of them have a rubber top that folds out into a cup so your dog can drink water from the cup. Some of them have collapsible, lightweight bowl for you to pour the water into. This could be a better option for bulldogs, boxers, and other dogs with wide faces.

Be sure that whatever water dispenser comes with your carrier will fit your dog’s face so she will easily be able to get enough water.

Another convenient feature that some carriers have is the ability for you to open a latch and squeeze the bottle to fill the dispenser, then close it when it is filled. At this time, you can give it to your dog. If your dog doesn’t finish all of the water, you can open the batch back up and allow the water to drain back into the bottle, so you won’t waste it.

Some people don’t really like this feature as they don’t want dirty water to go back into the bottle. To take care of this problem you can purchase a water carrier that is equipped with a filter.

Water Carriers with Filters

If you often take hikes or backpack with you dog in remote areas, then there may not be access to safe running water to refill your dog’s water bowl. In this case you will need to carry enough filled water bottles you think you need for your trip. This could become very heavy fast and the last think you want while backpacking is carrying extra weight.

Estimating is not perfect, so you could run out of water. In this case you can buy a dog water bottle with a filter to make possibly unsafe water safe to drink. A portable dog water bottle with a filter is an excellent choice if you spend much time hiking or backpacking in remote areas. This could really beat carrying several filled water bottles.
